Vape Devices & Hardware
Matched to your setup. Primed before you leave. Supported after.
Pod systems, box mods, tanks, coils, and batteries from authentic manufacturers — plus expert setup, device matching, and troubleshooting support. The first vape shop in Detroit Lakes, open since 2014. We know what works and what doesn’t, and we won’t sell you something that doesn’t fit how you vape.
Online you’re guessing. Here, we match the device to your specific use case, nicotine type, and e-liquid before you spend a dollar. We prime your coil before you leave. We walk you through operation and maintenance. We troubleshoot for free — even devices you didn’t buy from us. And we carry coils for everything we sell, so you’re never chasing parts online three weeks later when yours gives out.
Pod Systems vs. Box Mods — What’s Right for You
Two fundamentally different devices for two different styles of vaping. The wrong pairing — wrong device with the wrong liquid — means burnt coils, poor satisfaction, and wasted money. Our Detroit Lakes staff has been making these matches since 2014. Here’s how the categories break down.
Pod Systems
Mouth-to-Lung · 10–25W · Nic Salt Compatible
Compact, draw-activated or single-button devices designed for mouth-to-lung vaping — a draw style that closely mirrors a cigarette. Low power output (10–25W) vaporizes nicotine salt e-liquid efficiently at small vapor volume, delivering full nicotine satisfaction without needing large clouds to get there.
The vast majority of new customers who come into our Detroit Lakes store end up in this category — not because we steer them there, but because it matches how most people actually want to vape: simple, discreet, satisfying, and easy to maintain.
- Beginner-friendly — minimal settings, intuitive operation from day one
- Works with nicotine salt at 25–50mg for full satisfaction from small puffs
- Pocket-sized and discreet with strong battery life for their form factor
- Simple maintenance — swap pod or coil every 1–2 weeks
- Affordable complete setup — typically $25–$60 with e-liquid included
- Recommended brands: Vaporesso XROS, Uwell Caliburn, GeekVape Wenax series
- Anyone coming off cigarettes — the draw style matches, the nicotine delivery satisfies
- Daily carry users — pocket-sized, all-day battery life, no babysitting
- Simplicity seekers — no wattage menus, no coil builds, no temp control curves
- New vapers — the lowest barrier to a correct first setup
- Come in and we’ll put a few in your hand before you decide
Box Mods & Sub-Ohm Tanks
Direct-to-Lung · 40–200W+ · Freebase Nicotine Only
High-wattage devices (40–200W+) paired with sub-ohm tanks for direct-to-lung vaping — large vapor clouds, warm intense flavor, and full control over output, temperature, and airflow. Delivers the best cloud and flavor performance available in a vape setup, but requires knowledge to operate correctly.
You need to understand coil resistance ranges, wattage matching, VG/PG ratios, and battery safety before running a sub-ohm setup. Our Detroit Lakes staff can walk you through all of it — but this is not the right starting point for someone coming off cigarettes.
- Maximum vapor production and flavor intensity per puff
- Requires freebase nicotine at 3–6mg — never nicotine salt
- Adjustable wattage, temperature control, and custom output modes
- Higher upfront cost — $50–$150+ for a quality complete setup
- More maintenance — coil priming, tank cleaning, battery management
- Recommended brands: GeekVape Aegis, SMOK, VooPoo, Lost Vape
- Never use nicotine salt e-liquid in a sub-ohm mod. 50mg nic salt at 80W delivers an extreme nicotine load that causes severe nausea. This is the most common dangerous mistake new sub-ohm users make — and it’s entirely preventable.
- Not for ex-smokers starting out — the draw style and setup are too far from smoking to be a useful transition
- If you’re not certain which liquid type is correct for your device, come in before you fill the tank
Coils & Replacement Pods
Consumables · Replace Every 1–2 Weeks · In Stock for All Major Systems
The heating element in your device. Coils wear out regardless of device type — they’re the one consumable in any vape setup that needs regular replacement. We stock coils for all major systems we carry so you’re never in the position of searching online or waiting on a shipment when yours gives out mid-week.
- Pod coils and replacement pods — Vaporesso, Uwell, GeekVape pod systems
- Sub-ohm coil heads — major tanks and kits we carry in Detroit Lakes
- Typical lifespan: 1–2 weeks with regular daily use
- Sweet and dessert e-liquids shorten coil life significantly — sweetener caramelizes on the cotton
- Buy 3–5 at a time so you always have a replacement ready
- Prime every new coil before use. Add 2–3 drops of e-liquid directly to the cotton wick ports, fill the tank, and wait 5–10 minutes before your first puff.
- Skipping this step burns the cotton immediately and destroys the coil before it’s ever performed correctly
- We prime every coil we sell in Detroit Lakes before the customer leaves — you don’t have to figure this out alone
Batteries & Smart Chargers
18650 · 20700 · 21700 · Safety Critical
For box mods with removable batteries, this is where safety actually matters. The wrong cell, a damaged wrap, or improper charging is how vape devices fail dangerously. We carry authentic high-drain cells from trusted manufacturers and include battery safety education with every purchase — not as a formality, but because we’ve seen what happens when people skip it.
- Samsung 25R / 30Q, Molicel P26A / P42A — the cells we carry and trust
- 18650, 20700, and 21700 formats stocked in Detroit Lakes
- External smart chargers — always the preferred charging method over USB in-device
- Battery wrap replacement — free, on the spot, for any torn or nicked wrap
- Married battery labeling for dual and triple battery mods at purchase
- Inspect your battery wrap regularly. A torn or nicked wrap exposes bare metal. In a metal mod, that’s a short circuit. Bring torn batteries in — we’ll rewrap them for free, no purchase required.
- Never carry loose batteries in a pocket with keys or coins — always use a plastic battery case
- Never buy 18650 cells from unverified online sellers — counterfeit cells are common and have inadequate safety ratings

Problems We Fix at the Counter Every Day
Before you assume your device is broken, work through these. The overwhelming majority of vape hardware issues our Detroit Lakes customers bring in have straightforward causes and straightforward fixes. Here’s what’s actually happening and exactly what to do about it.
Burnt or Harsh Taste
Dry wick, unprimed coil, exceeded wattage range, or end-of-life coil
Almost always a coil issue. Once cotton burns, the coil is finished — there’s no recovering a burnt wick. The question is what caused it. A brand-new coil that burns immediately on first use was almost certainly never primed before installation. A coil that gradually loses flavor and then tastes harsh is simply at end of life — normal and expected. A coil that suddenly hits harsh mid-session may be running at wattage above its rated range.
Sweet and dessert e-liquids significantly shorten coil life. The sweetener compounds caramelize on the cotton during vaporization, building up residue that accelerates degradation. This isn’t a defect in the coil or the liquid — it’s chemistry. If you run sweet liquids exclusively, plan on replacing coils more frequently than average.
- New coil burnt immediately — it wasn’t primed; see the four-step priming guide below
- Gradual flavor loss then harsh — normal coil aging; replace it
- Sudden harsh hit — check wattage isn’t above the number printed on the coil
- Short coil life with sweet liquid — expected; sweetener caramelizes on cotton
- Still happening after a fresh coil? Bring it in — free diagnosis, any device
Device Won’t Fire or Shows Error Codes
“Atomizer Short” / “No Atomizer” / “Check Atomizer” / device completely unresponsive
“Atomizer Short” and “No Atomizer” are connection error messages, not hardware death sentences. They mean the device can’t read the coil correctly — which is almost always a seating, cleanliness, or coil issue rather than a dead mod. Work through the simple checks before assuming anything is broken.
A completely unresponsive device that won’t turn on is most commonly either discharged (many ship at partial charge) or locked. Most box mods require five rapid button presses to power on and off — this is a safety feature and not a defect. If you’ve tried everything and the device still won’t respond, bring it in. We diagnose for free on any device regardless of where you bought it.
- Charge it first — many devices ship partially depleted
- Five rapid clicks — most mods require this to unlock before firing
- Remove the coil or pod and firmly reseat it
- Clean the 510 pin and contact points with a dry cotton swab
- Try a fresh coil — faulty coils produce error codes even on working mods
- Still showing errors? Bring it in — free diagnosis, no appointment needed
Leaking Tank or Pod
Loose coil, overfilled tank, wrong VG/PG ratio, worn O-ring
Leaking is almost always a mechanical or assembly issue rather than a defect in the device. The most common cause is a loose coil — snug it down, but don’t over-tighten. Over-tightening strips the threads and creates a worse seal than a slightly loose coil. The second most common cause is overfilling: always leave a small air gap at the top of the tank. A full-to-the-rim fill floods the coil directly.
Wrong VG/PG ratio is a less obvious but frequent cause. Thin, high-PG liquids (50/50 or below) leak more readily through coil cotton that was designed for thicker high-VG juice. If your liquid is significantly thinner than what the coil was built for, it will find its way through gaps that a thicker liquid wouldn’t. Bring the device and the liquid in — we’ll identify the mismatch quickly.
- Snug the coil — firm but not over-tightened; over-tightening strips threads
- Leave an air gap — don’t fill to the rim; overfilling floods the coil
- Check VG/PG ratio matches what your coil needs — thin liquid leaks through thick-liquid coils
- O-ring worn or missing — bring it in; we replace these for free
- Gurgling after fill: close airflow and blow gently through the mouthpiece onto a paper towel
Weak Vapor or Muted Flavor
Low battery, wattage mismatch, aging coil, airflow setting, or vaper’s tongue
Under-performance narrows down to one of three culprits almost every time: low battery, wrong wattage for the coil, or a coil that’s past its useful life. Rule these out in order before looking further. A battery below 30% charge noticeably reduces output on both pod systems and box mods — the device is throttling power to protect the cell. Wattage set below the coil’s rated range produces cool, thin vapor even from a fresh coil on a full battery.
If flavor dropped suddenly and completely rather than gradually — and the device is otherwise performing correctly — this is likely vaper’s tongue: temporary olfactory fatigue from vaping the same flavor repeatedly. Switch to a different flavor for a few days and the sensation resets completely. It’s not a device issue and it’s not permanent.
- Charge the device — below 30% noticeably reduces output
- Confirm wattage is within the range printed on the coil — not at the low end
- Replace the coil — coils lose flavor before they taste burnt
- For MTL: close down airflow for a tighter draw and better flavor concentration
- Sudden complete flavor loss — vaper’s tongue; switch flavors for a few days
Battery Safety — What Every External Battery User Needs to Know
External battery mods are safe when operated correctly. The incidents you’ve heard about almost always trace back to the same small set of preventable mistakes. Every customer who buys a battery at our Detroit Lakes store gets this briefing — here it is in writing.
A torn, nicked, or peeling battery wrap exposes bare metal. In a metal mod tube, that’s a direct short circuit. Inspect before every use. Bring any torn battery into our Detroit Lakes store — we rewrap for free in two minutes.
Counterfeit 18650 cells are widespread online and at unvetted retailers. They carry inflated specs, inadequate continuous discharge ratings, and inferior protection. Samsung 25R/30Q, Molicel P26A/P42A — these are what we carry and what we trust.
External smart chargers monitor each cell independently and stop precisely at full charge. USB charging through the mod is harder on battery health. For daily users, a 2-bay charger is a worthwhile $20 investment. Never charge in a hot car or leave unattended overnight.
Dual and triple battery mods require paired batteries that charge and discharge together, always. Mixing batteries of different ages creates dangerous load imbalance. Buy in pairs, label them (A1/A2), use and charge together. We label them at purchase — just ask.
A loose 18650 in a pocket or bag with keys or coins is a thermal event waiting to happen. The positive terminal contacts metal, completes a circuit, and the battery vents heat rapidly. Always carry in a hard plastic battery case — they cost less than a dollar and eliminate the risk entirely.
Batteries degrade after 300–500 charge cycles. Signs they’re done: noticeably shorter runtime, warmth during normal use, or repeated “Weak Battery” warnings. A degraded cell under high load is a safety risk. Replace proactively — don’t run them until failure.
How to Prime a New Coil — Four Steps
Skipping this step burns the cotton wick on the first hit and destroys a fresh coil before it has ever performed correctly. It takes five minutes. Our Detroit Lakes staff primes every coil we sell before the customer leaves — but if you’re doing it at home, here’s exactly how.
-
1
Saturate the wick ports directly
Add 2–3 drops of e-liquid directly onto each visible cotton wick port on the side of the coil body. You’re manually pre-saturating the cotton so it doesn’t fire dry on the first hit. Every port gets drops — don’t skip any of them.
Use the same liquid you’re filling the tank with. Don’t prime with a different flavor — you’ll taste the crossover on your first few puffs. -
2
Install the coil and fill the tank
Thread or press the coil into place, reassemble the tank, and fill with e-liquid. Leave a small air gap at the top — do not fill completely to the rim. A full-to-the-rim tank floods the coil directly and causes the gurgling and leaking that new vapers often mistake for a device defect.
-
3
Wait 5–10 minutes — do not skip this
Set the device down and leave it alone. The cotton needs time to fully absorb e-liquid from the tank beyond what you applied manually in step one. This is the step most people skip because it feels unnecessary. It is not. A coil that fires at 30 seconds is not saturated; a coil that fires at 8 minutes is.
This is the single most skipped step in coil maintenance and the most common cause of a burnt new coil. If you’ve burnt a fresh coil before, this is almost certainly why. -
4
Start at the low end of the wattage range and ramp up
Take your first 2–3 puffs at the low end of the wattage range printed on the coil itself, then gradually increase toward your preferred setting over the next few puffs. This breaks in the coil correctly, seats the cotton fully, and meaningfully extends the lifespan of the coil compared to firing at full wattage immediately.
The wattage range is printed directly on the coil. If you can’t read it, bring it in — we’ll look it up for your specific coil model.
We Help Everyone — Not Just Our Own Customers
We’ve been the vape hardware resource in Detroit Lakes since 2014. That means helping people regardless of where they bought their device. Everything below is free, no purchase required, no appointment needed.
Troubleshooting — Any Device
Bring in any vape device regardless of where you purchased it. We diagnose the issue clearly, explain what’s wrong in plain terms, and give you honest options — fix it in-store, replace a part, or if the device is genuinely finished, tell you that directly without steering you toward an unnecessary new purchase. No judgment, no pressure.
Battery Wrap Replacement
A torn battery wrap is a genuine safety hazard and a two-minute fix. Bring in any battery with damaged, torn, or nicked wrapping and we’ll rewrap it on the spot at no charge — no purchase required. This is a community safety service. We do it for everyone because the alternative is a preventable incident.
Coil Compatibility Lookup
Not sure what coil fits your tank or pod system? Bring the device in or tell us the brand and model name — we’ll identify the correct coil, check stock, and let you know if we have it. We carry coils for all major systems we sell and many we don’t. If we don’t have it, we’ll tell you exactly what to search for online.
O-Ring Replacement
The most common cause of a leaking tank is a worn or missing O-ring — a rubber seal that costs less than a penny and takes two minutes to replace. We stock O-ring kits and will replace yours on the spot if we have a compatible size. Most leaks are resolved at the counter before you leave. No charge, no purchase required.
Vape Hardware FAQ — Answered by Detroit Lakes’ First Vape Shop
For almost everyone switching from cigarettes, a refillable pod system is the correct starting point. The draw style — pulling vapor into your mouth before inhaling, just like a cigarette — is familiar enough that the transition feels natural rather than jarring. Paired with nicotine salt e-liquid at 25–50mg, a pod system delivers satisfying nicotine from small, discreet puffs without needing to exhale a cloud to feel it.
What makes pod systems work for new vapers:
- Draw-activated or single-button — minimal learning curve from day one
- Pocket-sized, discreet, and all-day battery life for their form factor
- Compatible with 25–50mg nicotine salt for full satisfaction from small puffs
- Simple maintenance — swap pod or coil every 1–2 weeks, that’s it
- Complete setup typically $25–$60 with e-liquid included
One to two weeks is the typical lifespan for regular daily use — but several factors shift this significantly in either direction.
- Sweet or dessert e-liquids — sweetener compounds caramelize on the cotton during vaporization. Some liquids will degrade a coil in 3–4 days. This is chemistry, not a product defect.
- Chain vaping — firing repeatedly without pause doesn’t give the cotton time to re-saturate between hits, accelerating dry-burn degradation
- Wattage above the coil’s rated range — running hot shortens lifespan dramatically; always stay within the range printed on the coil
- VG/PG mismatch — thick high-VG liquid in a pod designed for thinner 50/50 liquid doesn’t wick properly and gunks up faster
Signs a coil needs replacing: noticeably diminished flavor, reduced vapor volume, a harsh or slightly burnt taste, or gurgling. Keep 3–5 spare coils on hand at all times so you’re never caught without one. We stock coils for all major systems we carry in Detroit Lakes.
For any device with removable batteries, use an external smart charger as your primary method. Here’s why it actually matters:
- External smart chargers monitor each cell independently and terminate precisely at full charge — most mod charging circuits don’t do this as accurately
- External charging puts significantly less wear on the device’s USB port over time
- You can charge spare batteries while still using the device — no downtime
- Better cell longevity over hundreds of charge cycles
For internal battery devices (most pod systems), USB charging through the included cable is your only option. Use the cable that came with the device, avoid fast chargers not rated for the device, and never charge in a hot car or leave charging unattended overnight.
Sub-ohm means a coil with resistance below 1.0Ω. Lower resistance requires more power to heat — which translates to more heat, more vapor volume, and more intense flavor per puff. Sub-ohm setups run at 40–200W+ and use a direct-to-lung draw style: you inhale vapor straight into the lungs without first pulling it into your mouth.
Sub-ohm is the right choice if:
- You want maximum vapor production and warm, dense clouds
- You prefer a direct-to-lung draw and already know what that feels like
- You’re an experienced vaper comfortable managing wattage settings, coil ranges, and battery safety
- You’re using freebase nicotine at 3–6mg
Sub-ohm is not the right choice if:
- You’re new to vaping — the draw style and setup complexity are too far from smoking to be a useful first device
- You use or plan to use nicotine salt e-liquid — never use nic salt in a sub-ohm tank; the nicotine load at those wattages causes severe nausea
- You want something discreet and easy to carry
We source exclusively from licensed, authorized distributors — not gray market wholesalers, overseas brokers, or platforms where counterfeit products are common. Every device we carry is authentic, sealed in original manufacturer packaging, and traceable to the supply chain.
What that means practically when you buy hardware in Detroit Lakes:
- Manufacturer authentication codes on most devices — you can verify on the brand’s own website
- Original sealed packaging with valid lot numbers and regional labeling
- Full manufacturer warranty on every device — counterfeit products don’t have this
- Coils that fit correctly — clone devices frequently have dimensional tolerances that cause genuine coils to fit poorly or fail to make proper contact
Counterfeit vape devices are genuinely common online and at unvetted retailers. They’re cheaper because they cut corners on battery cells, chipset safety circuits, and materials quality. We have never stocked a clone intentionally and verify our supply chain. If you’re uncertain about a device you purchased elsewhere, bring it in — we can help identify it.
Yes — always, and at no charge. We troubleshoot any vape device for any customer regardless of where it was purchased or how long ago. This is one of the things we’ve done since we opened in Detroit Lakes in 2014 and it’s not something we charge for.
What to bring when you come in:
- The device itself — mod or pod system, tank or pod, and coil if it’s a separate piece
- Removable batteries if the device uses them
- Charging cable if the issue is charging-related
- Tell us what error messages you’ve seen and what you’ve already tried
We’ll diagnose the issue clearly, tell you what’s wrong in plain terms, and give you honest options — fix it in-store, replace a part, or if the device is genuinely at end of life, tell you that directly without steering you toward a new purchase you may not need. No appointment required.
